If you qualify, a Direct Payment is like a financial boost from your Local Authority. It’s a unique way to access the services you need. With this payment, you get to be the boss! You can use it to buy the support you need, whether it’s help around the house or assistance with daily tasks. After an assessment, where a Social Worker or Social Care Assessor check what you can handle on your own and where you need a hand, the payment goes straight to you. If this is too much for you, the Local Authority can arrange for a ‘managed account’. You’re still in complete control, it just means someone else handles your payments.
This gives you total control over who helps you, how they help, and when they come. Direct Payments are all about independence, putting you in the front seat of your own life. You get to make your own decisions and take care of things yourself.
It’s important to know that a Direct Payment isn’t like getting extra money or a new benefit. You won’t lose any benefits you’re already getting, and it doesn’t count as taxable income. It’s just a way to help you live life on your terms
